Tsum Valley Trek is the new and sacred Himalayan pilgrimage valley trek opened for foreigner only in 2008. Tsum Valley situated to the North of Gorkha district is beyond Mount Ganesh in Manaslu region. Tsum Valley also called hidden valley is secretly situated between the Himalayas. Tsum valley trek offers trekkers an opportunity to view the spectacular mountains on all direction: Ganesh Himal to the South, Mt. Bauddha and Mount Himal Chuli to the West and Sringi Himal to North. Tsum valley is traditionally rich in culture, religion and sacred arts is inhabited by “Tsumbas” who are heavily Tibetan and practice Bon religion and have their own language. Interesting fact about these tribes is they still adopt polyandry marriage system in which all the brothers from a family marry a single girl.
Tsum valley once remained a part of Tibet is really an unexplored and mysterious area and is very different from any other area of the Himalayan region. The longest mani walls (over 250m) at Dzong and Phurpe, including wonderful monasteries, chortens and kaanis (gateway chortens to village) are scattered in the valley. The valley still preserves the circumbulation the foot steps of the great Buddhist Yogi Chyuchin Milarepa and circumbulation story of Guru Padmasambhava. Some resident of Tsum Valley reported that snow leopard, musk deer and the sign of ‘Yeti’, the abominable Snowman are often seen in Tsum valley. So we may get an opportunity to encounter with rare animals and mysterious Himalayan giant, the Yeti.
Trekking in Tsum Valley starts from Arughat after 7-8 hours drive from Kathmandu and end at the same place. Initially, the Tsum Valley Trekking Trail leads upstream along the Budhi Gandaki River passing through dense forest, terraced farmlands and beautiful settlements. After entering the Tsum Valley, we come across the changes in vegetation from dense subtropical to thin alpine forest, culturally rich and unique villages, beautiful landscapes and scenery. You will not only explore of the historical monasteries such as Mu Gompa, Rachen Gompa and Dhephu Doma Gompa but also walk through the glacier. The visit to the Milarepa (Namkading) cave is itself the reward of Tsum valley Trek.

Upon arrival in the Kathmandu Airport (TIA), you will be welcomed and greeted by our representative and then transfer to the hotel. After check in, you can either take rest; hang around in the city as it all depends upon your interests.
Max Altitude: 1300m/4264 ft
You’ll start the trek with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola, passing through lush green hills, terraced fields, and charming local villages. The road follows the Trishuli River, providing stunning views as you make your way to the starting point of your trek. After some hours of driving, you will eventually reach Machha Khola.

Your trek begins as you follow the trail along the Machha Khola River, crossing suspension bridges and passing through small villages like Khorlabesi and Tatopani. The path winds through dense forests and terraced fields before reaching Jagat, a small village with stone-paved streets and traditional houses. Overnight in Jagat.

The trail today ascends through a mix of forested areas and open landscapes, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. As you approach Lokpa, the gateway to the Tsum Valley, you’ll notice the changing architecture and cultural influences, reflecting the region’s Tibetan heritage.

Today, after breakfast you’ll continue trekking through lush forests and across several suspension bridges, with the river flowing far below. The trail gradually ascends to Chumling, a traditional village with stunning views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.

Today is an easy day. We trek ahead crossing the suspension bridge and through the forest. Enjoy the great view of Ganesh Himal. Again crossing a long suspension bridge, we reach Ripchet village. Passing by Gho village and crossing the Serpu Khola, a continuous climb for 2 hours to upper Tsum takes us to Chhokang-Paro. If the weather is clear we can see the superb view of Himalchuli (7893m/25,896ft.) and Ganesh Himal (7140m/24,350ft.).

In the morning, explore the village and then head north to visit the retreat where Lama Kongchog meditated for 26 years. You can learn about his reincarnation, featured in the DVD Unmistaken Child. As you trek, pass through small villages, a local school, and a suspension bridge, then reach Rachen Gompa, a nunnery similar to Kathmandu’s Kopan Monastery. Cross the Shiyar Khola, and walk through the villages of Lar, Phurbe, and Pangdun. Continue to Chhule, then cross another bridge and arrive at the Nile.

We walk to the west bank of the valley, climbing through dry landscapes and passing rows of chortens. We finally reach Mu Gompa, the largest and oldest gompa in the region with over 100 monks. It is the highest and most remote part of the Tsum Valley. We also visit the 600-year-old Dhephu Doma Gompa, which is a 30-45 minute uphill walk from Mu Gompa and has two nuns who have reported sightings of snow leopards and musk deer. The area is close to the Tibetan border, with tantalizing views of the border and nearby passes, Ngula Dhojyang (5,093m) to the east and Thapla Bhanjyang (5,104m) to the west.

You’ll spend the day exploring Mu Gompa and its surroundings. The area is rich in Tibetan culture and history, with the monastery serving as a spiritual center for the region. You can also hike to nearby viewpoints for panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

You’ll start the day by retracing your steps and descending through the Tsum Valley. As you walk, you pass by small villages and monasteries, enjoying the serene landscape. The trail takes you to Rachen Gompa, a significant religious site in the valley. Known for its beautiful architecture and peaceful surroundings, Rachen Gompa offers quiet surroundings where you can experience a tranquil atmosphere and learn more about the local culture and traditions.

The trek continues as you make your way back down the Chumling Valley, passing through forests, riverbanks, and traditional villages. The descent offers another chance to soak in the stunning landscapes and cultural richness of the Tsum Valley.

Today’s trek takes you through more varied terrain, including dense forests and open valleys. The trail leads to Philim, a larger village known for its terraced fields and vibrant local culture.

You’ll continue your descent through the valley, following the river and passing through familiar villages. The trail eventually brings you back to Machha Khola, where your trekking adventure began. Overnight in Machha Khola.

The drive back to Kathmandu offers a final opportunity to enjoy the scenic landscapes of rural Nepal. You’ll pass through lush hills and charming villages, arriving in the capital where you can relax and reflect on your trek.

After breakfast you are free till departure time. If you have more time you can do shopping or sightseeing around Kathmandu. Approximately 3 hours before your scheduled flight, a representative from Black Diamond drops you to the airport.

Upon arrival in Kathmandu, your stay will be arranged at Hotel Encounter Nepal or an equivalent top-tier accommodation. As you commence your trek, you will be staying in standard teahouses/lodges. Most teahouses or lodges serve rooms on a twin-sharing basis with an attached bathroom and hot shower facilities. Single-supplement rooms are served with an extra charge of USD 495. You may have to share a bathroom and toilets in the teahouses in this trekking region in both lower and higher elevations. In spite of that, we will always make sure to book you the best possible accommodation at Tsum Valley Trek.
Your meal plan in Kathmandu includes breakfast, providing the perfect start to each day. During the trek, you will be served a three-course meal. At the teahouses where we spend an overnight during the trek, you will be served a balanced and nourishing breakfast and dinner. For Lunch, we will stop at one of the teahouses along the way to our next destination. Black Diamond has also arranged a special Welcome and Farewell dinner for our guests. This will be accompanied by a captivating cultural performance, providing you with a memorable and delightful experience.
The best time to trek the Tsum Valley is Autumn (September to November) and Spring (March to May). These seasons offer the most favorable weather and trekking conditions with moderate temperatures, clear skies, and mesmerizing natural scenery. During the month of March to May, it offers stunning views of the Himal Chuli and Ganesh Himal. Trekkers can also enjoy the view of natural beauty such as blooming rhododendron, and blooming landscapes.
While trekking Tsum valley, it is essential to pack necessary items wisely. You should be sure not to overpack the stuff because you will be trekking through the rough terrain in high altitude areas and it will be difficult for yourself to carry all the stuff and trek. Doing the Tsum Valley Trek was a deeply rewarding journey, blending cultural immersion and natural marvels.
