Overview

Mt. Cholatse (6440m), a stunning peak with narrow ridge and step face, is located in the Khumbu region of the Nepal Himalaya. Cholatse lies on the ridge that separates Gokyo and Khumbu valleys. Mt. Cholatse oversee Mt. Taboche to the south. Sherpas and other trekers use the 5420 m pass to go between the Gokyo and Khumbu valleys. Interestingly, the word Cholatse is the combination three unique meanings in Tibetan language. The syllable ‘cho’ means lake, ‘la’ stands for pass, and ‘tse’ refers to peak, and therefore, Cholatse in Tibetan language literally “lake pass peak”. Unlike many mountains, there is no easy way to reach or descend from its summit. The Chola glacier descends off the east face.

Vern Clevenger, Galen Rowell, John Roskelley and Bill O’Connor were the first adventurers to defeat Cholatse peak via the southwest ridge on April 22, 1982. Nevertheless, Ueli Steck accomplished the first solo ascent on April 15, 2005 via north face. After flying to Lukla and trekking all the way to Gokyo, climbing Gokyo Ri for acclimatization, continuing trekking we reach Cholatse Base Camp. Comparatively, Mt. Cholatse peak climbing is considered as one of the hardest peak climbings in Nepal. Both ascent and descent are really tough in this peak climbing because of its narrow and steep ridge. That’s the reason only few climbers have been able to successfully reach the summit.

Climbers having no or less previous mountaineering experiences have difficulty in ascending this summit. You are required to be both physically and mentally strong and fit. The trail to Cholatse leads us not only through the panoramic landscape and dramatic views of Khumbu region but also offers magnificent views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Lhotse and other peaks. Nevertheless, it is one of the best destinations to explore and observe the Sherpa culture, their life style, tradition and old Monastery of Tengboche village.

Highlights

  • Amazing landscape and dramatic views of Khumbu region
  • Magnificent views of the Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse and many more other peaks
  • Opportunity to explore the Sherpa culture, their life style, tradition and old Monastery of Tengboche village.
