Kathmandu to Lhasa overland Tour is one of the most demanded trips that begins in Kathmandu and ends in Lhasa driving along the Friendship Highway through some of the most stunning landscapes on the Planet. The journey will passes through small Tibetan settlements, nomadic herdsmen wandering across the wide arid plains and overwhelming mountain peaks. Similarly it is a fascinating of the wealth of cultural interest and has plenty of opportunity to discover highland, the roof of the world, Tibet. Stunning landscapes and mountain views combined with its rich Buddhist history and culture, make visiting Tibet a truly unforgettable experience.
Early morning drive from Kathmandu to Nepal-Tibet border (Kodari) by private vehicle. After completing the necessary immigration and customs formalities continue to the steep, winding road to Nyalam. Throughout the journey enjoy the fantastic view of landscapes, rivers, deep valley with some overflowing waterfalls. Overnight at Nyalam.
After breakfast, commence the journey across the Tibetan plateau to next destination, Sakya. On the way visit Milarepa cave- the site of the celebrated philosopher’s meditation, and is located only 10 minutes (on foot) from the road. The trip continues across over the Lablung-La pass (5050m) and enjoys the breathtaking Mountain view of Mt. Cho-Oyu, Shishapagma and the Everest. Finally reach Sakya and visit Sakya Monastery which is one of the largest monasteries in Tibet and is home to the Sakya sect of Buddhism. It contains thousands of statues, paintings, murals, stupas, mandalas, and other holy objects, as well as libraries of scriptures in Tibetan, Chinese, Mongolian, and Sanskrit piled from floor to ceiling. Overnight at Sakya.
After breakfast drive to Shigatse, the second largest city in Tibet. On the way visit Natang Monastery which contains oldest printing house and collection of Tibetan printing blocks and hand-copied Buddhist scriptures. After 5 hours scenic drives finally reach Shigatse and visit Tashilhunpo Monastery- one of the six big monasteries of the Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism and the home of the Panchen Lama, which is located on the hillside overlooking Shigatse northwest of the town. The main structures found here are the Maitreya Chapel and Kelsang Temple. Overnight at Shigatse.
Morning, visit the bazaar of Shigatse and then drive towards Gyantse. On the way visit Shalu Monastery which is architecturally distinctive with the perfect combination of Han and Tibet architectural styles. Gyantse has a variety of important cultural and historical sites. Visit Khumbum Stupa- an extraordinary architectural masterpiece with a large gold-domed stupa and its nine levels rise in the manner of a step pyramid made it one of the most distinctive temples in the world, Palkhor Chode Monastery- houses Sakyapa, Kadampa and Gelugpa sects together and has combined characters of Han, Tibetan and Nepali architecture and Gyantse Dzong- one of the best preserved dzongs in Tibet, situated high above the town of Gyantse on a huge grey brown rock. Overnight at Gyantse.
After breakfast drive towards Lhasa. The highlight of this day is the Yamdrok Lake (turquoise Tso), which is one of the three holy lakes in Tibet and one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. After crossing the Karo La (5010 m) and Kamba- La (4794 m), the marvelous view of Yamdrok Lake appears. Further, cross the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra River) and have the distance view of Potala Palace. After 6 hours pleasant and scenic drives, finally reach the city of wonders, Lhasa. Overnight at Lhasa.
After breakfast, have an easy visit to Sera Monastery- the second largest Gelugpa university monasteries in Tibet, is the well preserved monastery of white-washed walls and golden roofs. After then visit Norbulingka- the summer palace of the Dalai Lama. Finally, visit Jokhang Monastery and Barkhor Market- Jokhang Monastery is the most revered and sacred shrine in all of Tibet and is constantly bustling with devotees. Barkhor Market is a very ancient round street surrounding the Jokhang Monastery and is a good place to purchase souvenirs.
Today tour begins with a visit to Potala Palace- the highest palace in the world and is Lhasa’s cardinal landmark which offers an awesome view of the entire city. It is the ideal example of architectural work and is mostly renowned as a residence of the Dalai Lama lineages. Later visit Drepung Monastery- the largest monastery among the great three Gelugpa university monasteries which was used to be the residence of the Dalai Lamas until the Great Fifth Dalai Lama constructed the Potala Palace.
Today is the departure day from Lhasa. After breakfast, free till departure time. Transfer to the airport for onward journey.
